Lee Rhiannon to visit Newcastle to speak against off-shore coal gas development
Greens MLC Lee Rhiannon will join other speakers at Nobby’s beach on Monday (10am, 10 November) to kick off a local campaign against the proposal for exploratory drilling for coal gasification off the Newcastle/Lake Macquarie coast.
Major concerns have been raised about the potential impact of such activity for the marine ecosystem, and serious inadequacies with environmental assessment processes associated with it (not to mention the implications for climate change of further large-scale investment in non-renewable energy sources).
Newcastle Greens councillor Michael Osborne (who has a motion on the matter before Newcastle council the following day) will also speak, along with other (yet to be confirmed) speakers from local environment groups.
Come and show your support for the campaign, and learn about what the proposal involves.
